Some coastal towns in Belgium are confronted with problems caused by the presence of large numbers of sea gulls. The gulls seek food and find it sometimes in the dust bins that are placed in the city centres or along the sea promenades. The sea gulls also open the garbage bags that are placed outside the homes until these are loaded in the garbage trucks of the city. When the garbage bags are opened or when the gulls seek food in the dust bins, rubbish is spread over the streets and other public areas! Also the droppings of the sea gulls cause problems in the coastal towns. With this project the city of Blankenberge wants to find a solution for the problems caused by the sea gulls. A combination of actions will probably be necessary. For example, the use of birds of prey to frighten the sea gulls and make them go somewhere else, the use of wooden silhouettes of birds of prey to terrify the sea gulls, replacing the eggs of the sea gulls by artificial eggs to reduce the sea gull population, and research means to sterilize the sea gulls. |
