Summary Top
In Noord-Holland and/or Zuid-Holland one or two pilot projects for specific stretches of coastline will be carried out to serve as examples of targeted policies and implementation. A stretch of coast with and without the coastal municipality is required. Land acquisition for coastal defence policy is one of the possibilities and opportunities, particularly in the North Holland peninsula where there are claims on land in vulnerable stretches of the coast. In addition to purchasing land in these areas, management measures will be drawn up for specific stretches of coastline. These will be based on the international expertise available within the project, and an important element will be finding a form of dynamic coastal management. Changes in the form of the coast can offer opportunities for nature and recreation, but also for housing and employment. Important points are indentifying which coastal forms have this potential and strengthening the natural dynamics of the coastline. How does a new form of coastal defence and coastal management in which emphasis is placed on the development of nature values relate to European regulations concerning Natura 2000? The project will include an assessment of this.In addition, there will be an international analysis of existing research results with the aim of developing guidelines on the use of relevant statistics and parameters in the development of coastal defence policy.
Objectives Top
Development of approaches to dealing with increasing risks to coastal defences and safety arising from climate change. New forms of coastline designed according to stringent safety criteria that meet nature conservation, recreation, energy supply and spatial planning requirements.
Outcomes Top
Guidelines based on an international analysis of research results on rising sea levels, dynamic coastal management and climate change in relation to coastal defences and safety. Implementation of pilot projects for specific stretches of coastline.
