Summary Top
The area between the town of Middelburg and Lake Veere (Het Veerse Meer) will be transformed into a wetland area with marshlands, shallow lakes, forestland and valuable ecological sites to connect the salty lake with the town of Middelburg. Except for creating this ecological environment, the area will be made suitable for recreation, tourism and unique residential developments. To provide for this, a safe alternative has to be found for the present system of protective, closed dikes around the lake. The ecological development should reach a sustainable level in which the composition and the quality of the lake waters are of major concern. The surface area of the site is 570 hectare (1=10.000 m2) acres with an estimated housing volume of 1500.
Objectives Top
Development of sustainable rural tourism. Increasing environmental awareness of the local population in Middelburg and the further region. Create an integrated functioning ecological network and a water environment at the edge of an existing ecological structure. Risk management. Create an unique living environment.
Outcomes Top
Forests, shallow lakes, canals navigable for small recreational vessels, marshlands accessible to local residents and tourists, scattered sites for residential developments.
