Summary Top
A logistical platform has been set up in the region of the North Sea Canal comprising approximately 25 large industrial companies and with the purpose of strengthening logistical co-operation between businesses in the NSC region. The primary aim is to optimize the use of infrastructure, port capacity and cargo capacity. Inter-regional partnerships have also been set up; the spearheads are the areas of origin and destination in the corridor between England, the Netherlands and Germany. Openings are also being sought for a partnership with Scandinavian destinations. The NSC logistical platform will also be used to develop a system of regional booking on the basis of research and inventories of ‘cargo (flows)’. Studies will be conducted to ascertain, amongst others, whether systems for internal logistical optimization which are consistently applied by a large regional company are suitable for use at regional level. Two pilot regions which are important as ports of origin and/or destination in the NSC area will be involved in the system (England and Scandinavia). Meantime, efforts are underway to establish co-operation with groups of companies in the Newcastle Humber Port Area (and hinterland), Duisburg and elsewhere in order to generate bi-lateral optimization.
Objectives Top
To help optimize the flow of transport and cargo by setting up (inter-) regional partnerships for a system of regional booking. This should lead to an increase in cargo levels and a reduction in the logistical and transport costs for the participating parties.
Outcomes Top
Regional partnerships for booking, transporting and dispatching cargo; Partnerships with regions in the corridor between England, the Netherlands and Germany for the optimal dispatch of cargo; Improved capacity; Lower costs per transported unit; and more capacity with less infrastructure.
