Summary Top

Busy airports have an important impact at the regional level. On the one hand, busy airports generate local employment and are a significant stimulus for economic growth. On the other hand they have negative impacts, attracting high levels of traffic, air pollution, concentrated waste generation, hazardous risks and noise nuisance. In practice, we find that the infrastructure around busy airports always lags behind prognoses of growth in air traffic. Given the presence of large, busy airports, the project aims to draft a set of guidelines for sound regional spatial and environmental planning.
