Summary Top

To promote the use of recycled glass in highway construction and repair. Recycled glass has been shown to give excellent results as a road aggregate material. The quarrying and road materials supplier RMC have used crushed glass in bound base courses. Foster Yeoman have also used crushed recycled glass in their Foamix. Recycled glass appears to be a cost effective substitute for quarried stone aggregates.

Objectives Top

Investigating effectiveness of recycled/regenenerated materials in construction and maintenance of roads and pavements. Demonstrate the potential for the Local Authority to use recycled glass in road construction as a local application for the glass gathered from bottle banks and kerb side collections. Increased recycling of glass in a sustainable production process should help reduce landfill costs; meet Government recycling targets and benefit the environment.

Outcomes Top

Trials and evaluation of materials. Cost comparison between traditional and recycling method. Newly resurfaced carriageways.
