Description

The partners will collaborate on treating Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB), which have serious health implications to humans via the ingestion of contaminated shell-fish. The will address this issue on the economic front, by giving the means to shellfisheries to protect and develop aquaculture industries.

Summary
The problems created by Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) are numerous in the marine areas of North West Europe and around the world. The health hazards are of concern to the shellfishery industry as the toxins created can be moderately to exceedingly harmful to humans who ingest the contaminated shellfish. The partners in this French-led project wish to tackle this problem on the economic front, by giving the means to shellfisheries to protect and develop aquaculture industries. The research links and data collected will be sustained in transnational risk assessment strategies and models of HAB development for use by regulators, monitoring bodies, industry and coastal zone managers throughout North West Europe, thereby ensuring that the objectives of safeguarding the shellfish aquaculture, human health and sustainability of the region are met.

Objectives

  1. By developing risk assessment strategies based on available data for and new data collected in targeted field pilot studies in which we shall study in detail the development of harmful algal blooms in relationship to physical and chemical drivers of bloom initiation (e.g. tides, water temperature, salinity, nutrients).
    This will allow us to propose a NW Europe region wide risk assessment criteria based on easily measured criteria that will benefit both regulators and industry.
  2. By exchanging mathematical models of HAB bloom development that exist within individual partner institutes we shall develop these models region wide. This intellectual property cannot be bought and is only freely exchanged through collaborative projects such as this.
    By combining the skills that exist within out pan NW region network we shall exchange methodologies and develop synergies that will better exploit our knowledge and resources than could be achieved on a national level.


  3. The project will be inclusive of stakeholders including regulators, monitoring agencies and the aquaculture industry. It will therefore help to develop more integrated working relationships between these bodies across the participating states.
