Description

Much of the cycling infrastructure on the 2,400km between Nantes and Budapest along the Loire, Rhine and Danube rivers already exists, but lacks continuity from one country to another. With a total of 18 partners from France, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium, the Nantes-Budapest project aims to standardize these cycling routes over a period of about four years. The objective is to make cycle routes crossing the NWE area, consistent both for tourists and local users. Led by the French [...]

Summary
Much of the cycling infrastructure on the 2.4000 km between Nantes and Budapest along the Loire, Rhine and Danube rivers already exists, however it lacks continuity from one country to another. With a total of 18 partners from France, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium, the Nantes-Budapest project aims to standardize these cycling routes over a period of about four years. The objective is to make the routes crossing the NWE area consistent for both tourism and sustainable mobility, for both locals and tourists. Led by the Conseil Régional du Centre, the project will implement uniform safety measures (signposting and equipment), the production of tourist information material, as well as creating local access to the sites using public transportation, and increasing awareness along the Loire, Rhine and Danube rivers. Using the German example of “Bett & Bike”, a transnational accommodation network will be set up based on and using already existing national labels. Partners from outside the NWE area will also be implicated in the routes. The final result will be a European-wide cycle route that will improve the sustainable development in partner regions while promoting further co-operation.

Objectives

  • to increase the access and accessibility for the local population, especially in the areas of the rivers Loire, Rhine and Danube.
  • to create an attractive tourist offer for local, trans- and international visitors, adapted to the special needs of cyclists, with easily recognizable and homogeneous quality standards, thus allowing transnational tourist flows and resulting in positive economic effects
  • to increase the awareness of the population and the visitors for the natural and cultural heritage and environmental protection

Activities

Expected Outcomes
The resulting cycle route will be a sustainable transport and tourist product of European-wide importance. In the long term, the project should improve the sustainable development in the partner regions and promote further co-operation among them.
