Rivers Need Space
Umbrella Initiative of European Flood Prevention and Flood Protection

The event on 18th January 2005 was a one day conference in the framework of the acqua delta 05 fair trade, which was part of a much bigger fair in the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. The conference was initiated by the Bavarian State Ministry of the Environment, Public Health and Consumer Protection, which acts as the lead partner and partner of several IIIB CADSES projects, and organised by the consultancy blue! which is managing these projects.

There were a total of 14 IIIB projects (plus the IRMA programme) presented during the day, four of these coming from the NWE area (JAF, SAFER, SDF, URBAN WATER), the others from CADSES and Alpine Space . Their topics all centered on classical flood prevention measures, especially around the rivers Oder and its contributories. Many of the Alpine Space projects also worked on topics which could better be summarised under 'risk management', such as initiatives on better forecasting on extreme meteorological events, risks of avalanches or taking into account for planning the risks of rocks toppling from the mountains.

It enabled the JTS to have a general overview of the field of Flood Risk Management in INTERREG today, and
a) to get an insight into what and how projects from other programme areas are operating in a field which certainly will be continued under the new objective 3 ,
b) to be updated by the NWE projects present, especially regarding foreseen events (SDF mid term event, Urban Water initiative on NRW event) and
c) to exchange knowledge with representatives of other programmes and from  the field of spatial planning (German CADSES Contact Point, Ulrike Herb from Bavarian ministry...)
