   Enhancing the maritime

and promoting
          territorial integration

The maritime potential of NWE is very significant, as the region boasts a large number of seaports which are among the largest in the world, and a hinterland stretching beyond the borders of the co-operation area. Maritime transport is an essential functional component of NWE not only for external and internal accessibility but also for economic growth. This priority seeks to enhance the maritime functions of NWE while promoting more sustainable forms of development of maritime/costal areas and seaport hinterlands.

This priority acknowledges the geographical fragmentation of NWE caused by seas. It seeks to improve the territorial integration between the British Isles and the NWE mainland zones by means of transnational co-operation on a broad range of topics, such as mobility/accessibility, business promotion, natural resource management and tourism. An important focus will be the co-operation between sea and inland ports and between regions across seas.

Examples of Approved Projects :

- The  SAIL II Project  ( Schéma d'Amenagement Intégré du Littoral)  

With an ambitious partnership including fifteen regions from the UK, France, Belgium and the Netherlands SAIL II (Schéma d'Aménagement Intégré du Littoral) is a transnational endeavour seeking to foster greater cooperation between maritime regions over three years. It aims to promote territorial integration between a triangle of coastal regions, including estuaries, in the Southern North Sea Area.

Other Examples of possible projects :

  • Sea-inland ports, other transport providers and relevant administrations within the hinterland of a large maritime hub could co-operate to ensure logistical integration, such as ticketing, information systems and the exploitation of existing infrastructure.

  • A network of seaports and other competent authorities based on either side of a common sea (North Sea, Irish Sea or Channel) may develop and implement a joint strategy to prevent wreckage, accidental pollution and other major risks.
